Cristina Castel-Branco has been a Professor of Landscape Architecture at the University of Lisbon, Portugal, (UTL) since 1989. She received her M.LA from the University of Massachusetts, and her Ph.D. from UTL. In addition to her research and instructional responsibilities at UTL, Castel-Branco has also taught Masters-level courses at universities throughout the world.  Notably, she led the consulting team on Landscape Architecture for EXPO ’98, which was held in Lisbon. Since 1991 she has served as Director of ACB-Ltd, a landscape design practice in Lisbon that specializes in the incorporation of sustainable heritage solutions into contemporary design in public and private gardens. ACB won the first Portuguese National Award for Landscape Architecture in 2005, a distinction it earned a second time in 2008. Castel-Branco is the author and editor of a dozen books and is widely published in journals as well.  She is a advisory  member of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), which works with UNESCO on preserving the world’s landscapes and cultural heritage.  She is a reader at the Dumbarton Oaks Library in Washington, D.C., and in 2015 was awarded the Honour of Officier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Minister of Culture and Communication.
