Introduction to applications in the field of “e-Biodiversity”

2 Março 2021, 16:45 Maria Maria Manuel Cordeiro Salgueiro Romeiras

This lesson provide an introduction to the recent applications in the field of “e-Biodiversity” to study the rich Mediterranean flora. The students will explore the information available in public databases to understand the uses and applications of plants as unique reservoirs for food and agriculture. Each group of 3 students will select a crop species from the Portuguese flora to be used as a case-stud. They will learn how to assess to available information on CWR gene pools through powerful international databases, in order to get data to generate a dataset for develop their project in the framework of this module.

Agrobiodiversity” and conservation of CWR

1 Março 2021, 16:00 Maria Maria Manuel Cordeiro Salgueiro Romeiras

During this lesson questions related to “Agrobiodiversity” and conservation of CWR – Crop Wild Relatives in Mediterranean hotspot region are explored. Students will be familiarized with concepts related the need to Preservation of crop diversity and value of CWR, which is an up-to-date question, as agriculture needs to produce more food under unpredictable climatic conditions.

Molecular tools and their potential application in the conservation of plant genetic resources:

23 Fevereiro 2021, 16:45 Maria Maria Manuel Cordeiro Salgueiro Romeiras

Molecular tools and their potential application in the conservation of plant genetic resources:

- Phylogenetics - study of the evolutionary history and relationships among individuals or groups of organisms. DNA sequences are used to trace the evolution
- DNA barcoding - identity species /accessions based on . Provide better resolution at intra-genus and above level. Plant barcoding studies use one or a few plastid regions (e.g. rbcL and matK, and the non-coding spacer trnH-psbA) and the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of nuclear ribosomal
- DNA Molecular markers - such as microsatellites and AFLP are mostly suitable for intra-species genotypic variation study. Microsatellite has been the most used molecular markers to address genetic diversity.
