Introduction to Module II: programme, bibliography. Some motivating examples and initial comments about modelling and statistical modelling in particular. Simple linear regressions in a descriptive context: the regression line formulas; the underlying Least Squares criterion; properties of the regression line intercept and slope; properties of the regression line. The three Sums of Squares. The Coefficient of Determination and its properties. Simple linear regressions with R and the goat milk example. The sensitivity of the Least Squares criterion to outliers and the Animals dataset example.
