Objectives:

This curricular unit aims to motivate doctoral students to pursue scientific research, and to improve their skills in debating and reporting. A series of seminars will be held to present innovative research across a spectrum of disciplines related to forestry. Researchers from the Forest Research Center and other research centres and universities, national and international, will be invited with the goal of covering the main research areas of forestry and natural resource management. Also, a journal club rational will be followed to critically evaluate recent published literature.

 

Program:

- Seminars given by invited speakers or other seminars attended by students (e.g. CEF/CEABN seminars, LEAF seminars, on-line seminars from other universities).

- Journal Club: a publication will be sent to students one week before the group discussion.

 

Evaluation:

The student must attend and participate in at least 6 seminars, and write a short report for each of the seminars. Should also participate in the 6 Journals Club sessions organized by this course. The final grade will be the mean of the grades of the 6 seminar reports.

 

The report for each seminar must follow this structure:

Identification:

Name of PhD student

Title of the seminar, name of the speaker, date and place

Personal comments:

Summary of the presentation, assessment how it fits to the student knowledge/experience, report on his/her interaction in the discussion period (if any), suggestions (length between 400 and 600 words).

Submission requirements:

Submission of report due in the 5 days following the seminar, by email to joaosilva@isa.ulisboa.pt, as an attachment in PDF format. The subject of the email should be Scientific Motivation Seminars Report. The name of the file in attachment should be Scientific Motivation Seminars Report followed by the date of the seminar and the name and surname of the student.
