Definition of the objectives for Module 2 exercise.
This module 2 exercise focuses on analyzing habitats within selected SACs (Carregal do Sal, Serra da Lousã, or Serra da Gardunha). It covers the calculation of habitat percentages relative to the total SAC area, examining the dominant habitats, their areas, and distribution, as well as identifying the largest and smallest habitats. The exercise also explores the evolution of a selected habitat type between initial and updated cartographies, highlighting changes in area, overlaps, expansions, and contractions. Sectoral Plan fact sheets provide insights into management measures and other relevant characteristics. SAC characterization includes land-use analysis and identification of potential natural vegetation series.
GIS tools reviewed include adding fields to attribute tables, calculating geometry, and using dissolve and union functions.

Introduction to vegetation mapping, focusing on the cartography of natural and semi-natural habitats and plant species within Natura 2000 sites under the Habitats Directive. Presentation of the hierarchical classification of habitats (Annex I), including habitat types and subtypes, and their application to Special Areas of Conservation (SACs). Description of the methodological framework for habitat mapping, including preparation of fieldwork, landscape analysis, use of GIS and spatial databases, sampling design, and data collection in the field. Explanation of cartographic rules, minimum mapping units, and criteria for habitat delimitation. Assessment of habitat conservation status, mapping confidence levels, main pressures and threats, and the role of vegetation cartography as a decision-support tool for nature conservation and spatial planning.

Legal framework for vegetation protection, addressing the evolution of nature conservation and biodiversity policies from the 1970s to the present. Revision of key ecological concepts supporting vegetation mapping, including potential natural vegetation, succession, vegetation series, thermotype, ombrotype, and land morphology. Analysis of major legal and strategic instruments for vegetation and habitat protection, including international conventions, European directives (Birds and Habitats), the Natura 2000 Network, the National Network of Protected Areas, the National System of Classified Areas, and the Fundamental Network for Nature Conservation. Discussion of recent European Union and Portuguese strategies for nature conservation and ecological restoration, with emphasis on the integration of biodiversity into spatial planning.
