Lecture 4. Interference and weed competition. Research methods in Weed Science

8 Outubro 2020, 14:30 Francisca Constança Frutuoso de Aguiar

Lecture 4 (Via Zoom/Colibri). Interference and weed competition. Critical Periods and importance of weed management. Research methods in Weed Science: weed abundance, distribution, diversity, and community Analyses. Sampling design. Univariate statistical methods in Weed Science.

Lecture 3 Part II. Perennial weeds –vegetative reproduction and ecological preferences

1 Outubro 2020, 14:30 Francisca Constança Frutuoso de Aguiar

Lecture 3 Part II. (via Zoom /Colibri). Summary of the germination constraints. Biology of perennial weeds. Summary of strategies of sexual and asexual reproduction of weeds. Examples – perennial weeds with diverse reproduction types (buds, tubers, corms, bulbils, rhizomes, suckers, runners, stollons, offsets) and ecological preferences.

Lecture 3 Part I. Weed identification in the field - seedlings and vegetative propagules

28 Setembro 2020, 11:00 Francisca Constança Frutuoso de Aguiar

Lecture 3 Part I. (Presential) Weed identification in the field - seedlings and vegetative propagules. Observation of first Autumn-Winter weed seedlings and mature spring-summer annuals at ISA Campus. Invasive Alien Species were also observed in cropland edges (examples: Arundo donax,  Albizia lophantha, Ricinus communis). Active learning activity using a kahoot quizz to auto-evaluation of progress on contents of former classes.

Lecture 2 Part II: Weed seeds - dormancy, seed bank, dispersal mechanisms and germination

24 Setembro 2020, 14:30 Francisca Constança Frutuoso de Aguiar

Lecture 2 Part II (Via Zoom/Colibri): Weed seeds dormancy, weed seed bank, seed and diaspore dispersal mechanisms, and germination requirements. Seed viability and viability tests. Ecological succession, open niches in agroecosystems and relevance for weed management.

Lecture 2 Part I. Characterization and ecology of weeds/invasive plant species: practical work

21 Setembro 2020, 11:00 Francisca Constança Frutuoso de Aguiar

Lecture 2 Part I (presential): Characterization and ecology of weeds/invasive plant species: practical work.

The work was done as follows: I) the students choose and photograph a weed or an invasive alien plant species; II)  the species is characterized by the students  (morphology, ecology, distribution, type of weed) using books and on-line resources, III) the students present to the class the species selected and discuss briefly the context and the relevance of the species in Portugal or abroad.
