Miguel Mourato obtained his PhD in Chemical Engineering in 1997 and is presently Assistant Professor at ISA and member of the research unit LEAF. He teaches several BSc and Masters courses, mainly related to analytical chemistry and biochemistry. His main scientific interests are centred in the quantification of mineral elements in different food products, of toxic metals (like Cd, As and Pb) and on the study of the oxidative stress induced by several abiotic factors in plants, mainly heavy metals. Has been actively involved in managing assignments at ISA, the most relevant being as secretary of the scientific council (2005-2009) and president of the pedagogical council (between 2009-2014 and 2018 to the present).

Thesis supervision: Has supervised 4 PhD thesis (2 of them already finished) and 30 master thesis. Has participated in the jury of 13 PhD thesis (5 of them abroad) and of 23 master thesis, besides the ones as supervisor.

Participation in research projects:

- Co-coordinator of the project PTDC/ASP-PLA /28350/2017 “SafeGrains - Contamination of stored grain and derivatives by insect pests and fungi”. (ongoing)

- Coordinator at ISA of the project “Avaliação da Qualidade dos Solos, das Águas Subterrâneas e das Espécies Hortícolas em Hortas Urbanas de Lisboa – Identificação de Medidas de Mitigação Visando a Proteção da Saúde Pública”.

- Researcher in the project PTDC/AGR-PRO/4091/2012 “Biodisponiblilidade e transferência de nanopartículas metálicas na cadeia alimentar terrestre (Bioavailability and trophic transfer of metal-based engineered nanoparticles in terrestrial foodchains). 2013-2015.

- Coordinator of the project PTDC/AGR-AAM/102821/2008 “Plant response to trace elements toxicity: cellular mechanisms for detoxification”, finished in July 2013.

- Researcher in the project POCI/AMB/55312/2004: "Soil-plant transfer of trace elements. A phytoremediation study”, finished in 2009.

- Researcher in the project POCTI/AGG/46559/2002: "The use of biochemical and chemical methods to anticipate nitrogen mineralization and carbon sequestration in organic wastes applied to soils”, finished in 2007.

- Researcher in the project POCTI/AGG/44895/2002: "Effect of excess copper in tomato plants”, finished in 2007.
