Biological diversity. Characterization of species. Case studies

In the first part of the class it was provided an introduction to the conservation of plant Genetic Resources. Different questions were explored, namely:

1. How individual components of biodiversity—genes, species, and ecosystems—provide society with a wide array of goods and services in the field of the Genetic Resources;

2. Hotspots of biodiversity and their distribution within the biogeographical regions. Threats to biodiversity and approaches to conserve the biodiversity;

3. Wild Plants Used for Food and Conservation of Plant Genetic Resources.

In the second part of the class it was provided an introduction to the recent applications in the field of “e-Biodiversity”. The students will learn to explore the information available in public databases to understand the uses and applications of plants as unique reservoirs for food and agriculture.
